I hope this site takes off

Post  RagingBuddhist on Sun Nov 11, 2012 5:00 am

As a 50+ year-old, coming from a religiously divided family, I've had years of seeing, firsthand, how detrimental religion is to society. I don't know that I deny the concept of there being a higher power, but I don't really put too much thought into it either. I've long considered myself simply anti-religion, preferring not to label myself an atheist or an agnostic. Religion, with it's elitism and divisiveness, has long outlived its usefulness and is definitely retarding the advancement of the human race.

When I saw the link to this site on the Amazon religion forum, I knew I'd be signing up. Maybe I'll see something to help me help someone else have a real spiritual awakening!

Welcome RagingBuddhist! Weren’t you a regular poster on Amazon? I’m pretty sure I’ve enjoyed your posts there. Regardless, it’s great to have you with us. If we can grow our numbers, we might be able to actually help some have those “spiritual awakenings.” This might allow us to organize and/or support those actions to expose the harmful nature of religion, but it will take time to reach the tipping point.

Hello, Chuck. Thanks for the welcome.
I guess you could say I was a regular on Amazon and I recognized your name from there as well. I still post from time to time but, as I'm sure others have felt at times, the futility of trying to get people to think critically gets old. I'm not as active as I used to be.

As far as growing the numbers here, there are a few people I can "safely" tell about this site. My family is out - they still don't accept my lack of belief even though I've been dogma-free for years.

Back at you RagingBuddhist,
I’m sorry to about your inactivity! The reason I remember your posts is that they seemed very good to me. I agree that it is almost impossible to get people to think critically at the moment of the debate, but I’m not normally trying to win the debate per say but trying to seeds that the listener will have to keep chopping down as the logic and reason of those seeds grow. I have actually had people use the very same arguments I used on them years later. I can remember my inward smiles from those moments. My real target when I debate in person or post on line are the lurkers, those who only listen or read. I think there is a real chance of getting them to think and question critically, and we both know the Bible is its own worst enemy ;-)

Any help in growing the numbers would be great, even if it is only one more active poster. We have to reach the tipping point to survive. I’m just a poster, but I really think what we’re doing is what should be done to help society more forward, i.e. freedom from superstition. Just think what a difference just the millions and millions of dollars that go to the business of fleecing the sheep went to medical research. Gee, we just might a cure for cancer by now.

My family know I’m a free thinking, bleeding heart liberal, and they’ve learned to deal with it. I have two grown children and two grandchildren, all atheists. My daughter-in-law actually cried from happiness when she found out my son was an atheist. They were both in their thirtys and both career people. She had been in the closet a long time :-)

P.S. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
